This portfolio is a reflection of my improvement throughout this year. My art has taken on a new style as I have explored more techniques for painting. I have always been a fan of acrylic, and never ventured far outside that medium. This year I strived to push myself to try at least one other medium, and complete a work that I was proud of in that medium. I feel I have succeeded in that goal, as I have discovered a love for pastel, which I previously was not fond of. While I did not stick to using pastel, I feel better knowing that I have another medium I can use instead of acrylic.
To further experiment with acrylic, I decided to explore using texture. It was hard for me at first to get used to using heavy strokes with lots of paint, as opposed to my usual thin layers, but I learned to embrace it. I absolutely love how the texture turned out. I have pieces with smooth textured strokes, and with sponged on harsh texture. On of my concentrations I made by using the sponge painting technique to get a harsh textured result. This texture I felt mimicked a pineapple very well, which helped me greatly since I was going for pineapple inspired animals.
When I look at my art as a whole, I feel there isn’t a blatant recurring theme. There is however the same idea being shown throughout my pieces. That idea is to show whimsical aspects in art, whether the piece exudes that aspect or not. I had many artistic influences in my pieces seeing as I was experimenting with different styles. Cyril Renaldo’s piece After the Rain helped me when making my clockwork surrealist painting. When doing my illustration piece Thomas Kinkade Studios’ Disney’s Alice in Wonderland inspired me to take a whimsical approach. Water Lilies by Claude Monet inspired me to experiment with texture in my paintings. Overall, I’d say these artists helped me to develop my style further.
